KB-72561: Server in Hot-Standby domain is not recognized.

Question:

In a Hot-Standby architecture, the backup server remains stopped even after the main one has failed. Why does this happen?

Solution:

Currently, Elipse E3’s Hot-Standby module recognizes NetBIOS as the computer’s name. Therefore, the server’s name can’t be longer than 15 characters, which is the NetBIOS limit for naming the computer on the network. If this limit is broken, the server won’t detect it as part of the Hot-Standby domain, and consequently it won’t execute it. One way to work around this situation is using a truncated name (similar to the one in Windows) when setting up the E3 domain.

NOTE: this problem can happen to either the primary or the secondary server, or even to both.
