Question:
Why can’t the IP address be used to indicate the server in remote domains and HotStandby connections?
Solution:
This is not allowed because there are cases when a certain machine can have more than one IP. Examples:
- Machines with more than one NIC.
- Machines with dynamic IPs.
- Machines with redundant NICs.
In case of HotStandby, the machine needs to know exactly which server it is connected to; this is indicated by the server name, regardless of how many IPs it has. Please notice that the same .DOM file is loaded in several machines, requiring the identifier presented in the settings to be universal to all f them.
In case of remote domains, the name guarantees the local alias is identified correctly as such, which in turn also guarantees the machine will work properly, even when there is no IP address.
In other words, using the name to identify the server is what GUARANTEES the software will work properly, even if in the cases when the IP address could be used instead.
