{"id":1835,"date":"2019-03-25T17:36:52","date_gmt":"2019-03-25T20:36:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/xexeu.elipse.com.br\/pt\/hotstandby-frequently-asked-questions-faq\/"},"modified":"2019-10-03T16:45:41","modified_gmt":"2019-10-03T19:45:41","slug":"hotstandby-frequently-asked-questions-faq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kb.elipse.com.br\/en\/hotstandby-frequently-asked-questions-faq\/","title":{"rendered":"HotStandBy &#8211; Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)."},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">1) How can I force a server switchover? <\/span><\/p>\n<p>To do so, there is more than one possibility:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Go to <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">E3Admin <\/span>of the computer in StandBy, and select <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Server&#8211;Activate!<\/span> option, according to the figure below:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/kb.elipse.com.br\/images\/ID2920\/fig1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"271\" align=\"baseline\" border=\"0\" \/><\/div>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Another option is simulating a connection error. This can be done by unplugging the network cable from the computer, for example.<\/li>\n<li>You can also use the Server (Application) object\u2019s <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">ReportFailure()<\/span> method to generate an error in the application. For example:<span style=\"font-style: italic;\"> Application.ReportFailure &#8220;Failure1&#8221;, &#8220;Failure on the application!&#8221;, 5<\/span>. When you execute this method, the servers will be switched over, and you will be able to see and acknowledge the error via <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">E3Admin<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/kb.elipse.com.br\/images\/ID2920\/fig2.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"261\" align=\"baseline\" border=\"0\" \/><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"width: 529px; height: 253px;\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/kb.elipse.com.br\/images\/ID2920\/fig3.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"308\" align=\"baseline\" border=\"0\" \/><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>These are the actions that DO NOT work to simulate a connection error: closing the Domain, closing E3Server, turning off the computer, and shutting the machine down. For futher information, please refer to the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Scripts Reference Manual<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2) What happens when there is a power breakdown, or when the main machine is turned off? <\/span><\/p>\n<p>When this occurs, the backup server takes over the application&#8217;s execution. However, a power breakdown can corrupt the application&#8217;s files; so, we do not recommend that you perform this type of test. In addition, when restarting the main machine&#8217;s operating system, you must open the Domain again to make it ready for the next server switchover.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">3) What happens if the integrity ping fails?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hot-Standby algorithm demands a third network entity to be declared (the other two being the main and the backup servers) to determine whether the network is working. If you can access neither the integrity address nor the backup server, the main server assumes that its network interface is having problems and immediately terminates the Domain execution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">4) Can I use the IP of one of the servers as the integrity ping? <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yes, you can, but we do not recommend that you do this, because the integrity ping&#8217;s purpose is to have a third machine connected to the other servers checking whether the network is working. Nonetheless, if you do configure one of the servers as the integrity ping, one the following outcomes may occur:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If the machine set up with the integrity ping fails, the other computer DOES NOT take over the application&#8217;s execution;<\/li>\n<li>If the machine not set up with the integrity ping fails, the other computer takes over the application&#8217;s execution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><br style=\"font-weight: bold;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">5)\u00a0 What happens when the network stops working? <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Domain will stop and both servers\u00a0will\u00a0stay in\u00a0standby.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">6) Why is the main server starting in Standby mode, and vice versa? <\/span><\/p>\n<p>This happens because when HotStandBy starts, it sorts the servers in alphabetical order from the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">machines<\/span>&#8216; names instead of the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">server<\/span>&#8216;s, regardless of how <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">E3Admin <\/span>had been set up.\u00a0 For example, if <span style=\"font-family: Courier New;\">TEST <\/span>computer is set up as the main server, and <span style=\"font-family: Courier New;\">ELIPSE <\/span>computer as the backup one, the system will start in the inverted order. If this happens, you must switch them over manually.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">7) What happens when I try to connect an E3 Viewer to the server in StandBy?\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The E3Viewer is automatically redirected to the active server.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">8) How can I open an E3Viewer per machine? <\/span><\/p>\n<p>To do so, just open the E3 Viewers and connect them to the local server.<\/p>\n<p><br style=\"font-weight: bold;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">9) Does HotStandBy work in Demo mode?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>No, it does not. You must purchase a HotStandBy license.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">10) How can I set up\u00a0 the <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Time to activate backup server<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> option?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The larger the application, the higher the value to be set in this option.
