Using Simatic Net as an OPC Server

1) Introduction

The Simatic Net software, which communicates with different Siemens device networks, has the possibility of implementing communication with Elipse supervisory systems in two different ways:

  • Using S7-Functions function library: this is the normal way, which uses MPI driver for implementing data to be read. The present document describes how to implement communication using this way.
  • Using OPC: The Elipse supervisory, be it SCADA or E3, connects to Siemens software via OPC interface. The Simatic Net can act as an OPC Server, providing data so that an OPC client can access it and deal with it in a proper way for the sistem.

The necessary configuration for Siemens system to be properly executed is, basically, the same as described on the document about S7-Functions. The basic difference is relative to the type of resource will be created (an application or an OPC Server). To use a driver (option 1, described above), it is necessary to create an Application item. On the other hand, to use an OPC, an OPC Server item must be created. From now on, the communication configuration procedure is almost the same:

  • Configure the Connections item, which is relative to the installed hardware.
  • Downloading or importingthe XDB file to the computer where the Simatic Net will be executed.
  • Configure the OPC Client (Elipse SCADA or E3).
  • Run the final project.

If you have any difficulty to configure a Siemens network, please check the document about this issue. If your question is not solved, ask Elipse Software technical support using the available emails, or directly on Elipse's offices.

2) Station Configuration Editor

The final configuration for a computer to communicate using OPC is illustrated on figure 1. This screen can be accessed by double-clicking Station Configuration Editor item, available on Windows taskbar after installing Simatic net on the computer.

3) Configuring the OPC Client

The configuration of Elipse softwares to communicate using OPC can be checked on the documents in attachment.
